Some things remain the same

I sit in my college library, wondering how I’ll read the 100 pages of a sociology text I have planned for the night. I’m extremely sleepy and exhausted, so I play some old worship favorites to stay awake. And then, because even the music cannot help me sustain my focus on my pages, I begin to write.

(How blissful is this new world where yours truly writes when she cannot focus lol, in the past, I would have turned to good ‘ol YouTube)

Some things remain the same

Somethings stay the same. Boyfriends may come and go, classes may come and go, friends may come and go, but some things stay the same. You may wake up tomorrow with absolutely vision, when you were completely fine today. But there are some things which remain the same.

Where can I go from your Spirit?

   Where can I flee from your presence?

If I go up to the heavens, you are there;

   if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

If I rise on the wings of the dawn,

   if I settle on the far side of the sea,

You may wake up tomorrow in an existential crisis, which affects every sphere of your life, including your academic (or professional) performance. You may sit in all your classes and not understand anything. Don’t worry too hard, there are some things which stay the same.

You may suddenly feel a weight of loneliness, which you’ve never experienced before. You may begin to feel like the outsider. Familiar spaces and faces may become strange. Hobbies and habits may lose their charm. Take heart, stay strong, there are some things which stay the same.

even there your hand will guide me,

   your right hand will hold me fast.

If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me

   and the light become night around me,”

even the darkness will not be dark to you;

   the night will shine like the day,

   for darkness is as light to you.

The ones who once promised to love and care for you forever may suddenly have become your sworn enemies. The ones who you’ve trusted with your life’s deepest and darkest secrets may become the harbingers of your downfall. Rest. There are some things which remain the same.

You may suddenly not recognise your parents any more; the same people who were your childhood heroes. You may lived every moment of your life praying to be half the people they are. And suddenly you may realize that they’re not who you’ve always thought they were. Don’t worry, darling, there are some things which remain the same.

For you created my inmost being;

   you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

   your works are wonderful,

   I know that full well.

My frame was not hidden from you

   when I was made in the secret place,

   when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.

You may to your own self, become a stranger. You may disappoint yourself and even begin to resent yourself. You may look in the mirror and not recognize the person staring back at you. Your own thoughts may become preposterous. Your own habits may become disgusting. Don’t worry, love, there are some things which remain the same.

Your eyes saw my unformed body;

   all the days ordained for me were written in your book

   before one of them came to be.

How precious to me are your thoughts, God!

   How vast is the sum of them!

Were I to count them,

   they would outnumber the grains of sand—

   when I awake, I am still with you.

There’s one thing that can never change in this life. It’s the love of God.

Rest today, knowing that God’s love for you does not change. He loves you much more than you can ever imagine. Even if everything in your life is unrecognizable, His love remains the same. Don’t worry, don’t fret. God’s love for you is unshakable.

That’s Psalm 139, if you’d like to take a look.

  2. Alheri, this is absolutely inspired! You drew me in and it was like water for a thirsty soul. Thank you and I also love Psalm 139 — so full of promises.
