What to do when you don’t want to pray.

I recently read an article somewhere on the world wide web, where this young lady was talking about not hearing from God. She felt like He had abandoned her, and she was unable to reach Him. She felt like her life has been stagnant for the past six years and she wanted God to say something, anything to her.

I thought about the moments of silence in my own life, and times when I haven’t felt access to God. Honestly, one trick that I know works for sure is praise.

When you don’t want to pray, but you still somehow want access to the Lord, please put a praise on it.

Now, there’s a difference between wanting to hear from the Lord but not wanting to pray. Prayer is an expressway to God, but it’s not the only one. Praising is another way to access His divine majesty.

You can pray amiss, but you cannot praise amiss.

If there’s one thing you can absolutely get right, it’s praise. You can pray for the wrong things, you can pray with the wrong intentions, you can pray selfish prayers. But your  praise cannot be selfish or wrong.

By it’s very definition, praise means ascribing the power and glory to another. Praise God for who He is, not for what He has done for you. Praise Him as though He’s given you the entire world at your feet (He literally has, but we don’t always feel that way).

Praise Him not because of anything else, but because He’s the one and only Almighty God.

What if I don’t even feel like praising?

Just fake it till you make it. That may be bad advice but honestly it’s worked for me. Never have I been in my right mind and not wanted to praise God, at least I don’t remember one instance.

There have been times when I’ve not wanted to praise God because I’ve wondered what He’s done for me. But at those times I take my eyes off my life and focus on the Lord.

Praise is not about us, it’s about God. When we don’t want to praise God, or even pray, it’s because we’re looking at ourselves. You can never fix your eyes on Jesus and not want to praise Him. His majesty is overpowering. His might is beyond comprehension. So how exactly do you keep your eyes and mind on such a being and not be overwhelmed?

So, when you don’t want to pray, praise, and when you don’t want to praise, take your eyes off yourself and your situation.

Think about who God is, as seen in the bible. Think about all the mighty things He did from days of old, and I assure you, your praise will come right back to your lips.

By no means is this an exhaustive post. By no means is this the ultimate solution. But this works. It’s worked for me, and I hope it works for someone too.

Please let me know what you think below.

Now let’s go a’praising.

Mmm!!! I Love this post. Succinct and apt! You know how sometimes you read the word of God or hear a preaching and it’s as if someone poured honey in your spirit? That’s how I felt as I read through and listened to the song.
God bless you and increase you!

    • This is such a lovely compliment! Mainly because I love honey, and because I KNOW what it feels like when someone pours honey in your spirit! 🙂

    • I like that you said worship is a lifestyle. Definitely something we all need to practice and learn! We worship because we are! We are created to live a life of worship! ❤
