I got Smacked in the Face!

You guys!!!

My devotional for yesterday smacked me in the face!

Here is what Mr Oswald Chambers had to say to me:

“Prayer is often a temptation to bank on a miracle of God instead of on a moral issue; that is, it is much easier to ask God to do my work than it is to do it myself. Until we are disciplined properly, we will always be inclined to bank on God’s miracles and refuse to do the moral thing ourselves. It is our job, and it will never be done unless we do it.

“Oh, well, I will pray and ask God to clean this thing up for me.” God won’t. We must do our own work. God will do more than we can do, but only in relationship to our spiritual growth.

Reflection Questions: What am I trying to get God to do that I should do myself? Restore a relationship? Resolve a problem at work? Choose my career? What will I take responsibility for today?”

Gosh, such a lovely picture!

Dear friends, that short  passage is saying two things:

1. Do your own work: God will help you when you need help, He will reward you when you are faithful. When you are diligent in your work, He will make a way for you to stand before kings. When you are faithful in the little He gives you, He will give you even more. But He absolutely abhors laziness. Don’t not do your homework and then begin to fast and pray to see the exam papers in your dream. Do your work, dear student. Meet your deadlines, dear worker. Do the needful, and then will the Lord give increase to your labor.

2. God does not condone laziness: Even Jesus had to get up early to pray! He had to pray without ceasing. He wept in the garden of gethsemane to empower Himself for calvary! Moses fasted for forty days twice. Elijah fasted for forty days. The disciples were called to pray and pray and pray. We must be diligent in our spiritual lives. We must take our walk with God seriously. I wrote about that yesterday, but I see it creeping up at me everywhere I turn. Hence, I am taking this as a warning, especially now that final exams are approaching and my spiritual life is under threat. And we all know that when Alheri does not pray and read her bible, she’s a mess. Heed the warning Alheri, don’t just blog about it, heed it!

3. There are somethings that you need to fix yourself: God has given us the wisdom for fixing our relationships. You have noticed that someone around you is downcast, yet you do nothing. You can see the need all around you, yet you don’t move a finger. Your friend is struggling with school work, a failed relationship, timeliness, something, yet you do not extend a helping hand. That’s a shame. But that’s what we do everyday. God has given us the ability to fix some of these problems, which we encounter on the daily. Stop waiting for Him to come down and do the work Himself. He has done enough already! Live your faith. Live. Your. Calling.

Again, if you don’t know how to go about these, ask. Don’t be ambivalent. Ask the Lord to show you the way, but in the meantime, be busy with the ministry where He has placed you!

On that note, please check out Oswald Chambers. My friends Priscilla and Ryan from yesterday laughed at me for not knowing him before now. But forgive me veterans. I’m still a learner haha. Let me know what you think about all this in the comments section below!

I’ve looooved my devotional, and I’ll certainly be reading more and more of his work in the future. For now, please check out

All the best friends,

Talk to you soon!

  4. We are to do our part so so true. Just don’t try and do your own thing. Do your part based on Gods direction. Then all will be as it should.
